Public Involvement

Upcoming Public Involvement Opportunities

The Community Infrastructure Enhancement Plan would identify improvements to address bicycle and pedestrian safety, access to community centers, landscaping options at neighborhood entrances, project-related stormwater improvements, and traffic calming measures that would be implemented as part of the project.

If you missed the Community Improvements Open House on March 6, 2021, you can still participate by:

Due to the potential for significant impacts to the environment and the community, an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was prepared and can be reviewed on our Draft EIS page. The project team presented the reasonable alternatives to the public during the fall of 2019 for review and comment. The public was invited to view the recommended preferred alternative and more from the Draft EIS and to provide feedback by January 15, 2021. Visit the Public Hearing webpage

The DRAFT Community Mitigation Plan for I-526 LCC WEST is available on our Community Commitments page. View the plan, get to know your Community Advisory Council, and discuss with your peers on our forum. Got questions or comments?

Additionally, a community office was opened at 5605A Rivers Avenue (Gas Lite Square) to provide resources and information about the project within your community.

Public Hearing

Your Voice Matters. The public was encouraged to participate in the I-526 Lowcountry Corridor WEST Public Hearing this past fall, and to engage with us online or in-person. The official comment period for the I-526 Lowcountry Corridor WEST Public Hearing was October 30, 2020, through January 15, 2021. The purpose of the Public Hearing was to:

  • Provide an update on the I-526 Lowcountry Corridor WEST (I-526 LCC WEST)
  • Present the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS), including the Recommended Preferred Alternative and the DRAFT Community Mitigation Plan. The DEIS will be available for view starting October 30, 2020, on the project website or in hard copy at the Community Office.
  • Ask for YOUR comments, feedback, and concerns!
Visit the WEST Public Hearing webpage now!

Meaningful input has been our number one priority. The public had until January 15, 2021, to provide comments and participate in the Environmental Justice Community Mitigation Plan Survey. You can view our Public Hearing Engagement Options infographic for more details on how the public was engaged and encouraged to provide their comments!.

Community Advisory Council

The I-526 Lowcountry Corridor WEST proposed project improvements are anticipated to impact several residential communities in close proximity to the I-526 and I-26 interchange. These communities have been identified as Environmental Justice (EJ) communities.

Over the last year, we have been working hand-in-hand with the project’s Community Advisory Council (CAC) to develop a DRAFT Community Mitigation Plan to lessen those impacts to the environmental justice neighborhoods of Ferndale, Highland Terrace, Liberty Park, and Russelldale.

This DRAFT plan addresses affordable housing, community centers, visual appearance and restoring community connections. However, it is simply a DRAFT and needs the full community’s input, NOW through January 15, 2021.We have also introduced several new tools to help engage you better during these times of social distancing. These include the Community Commitments webpage, a community online Forum, an online survey, text messaging and a community office staff webpage.
